Remembering Paul Gray – one year on

By Georgi Bomb

On this day in 2010, Slipknot bassist Paul Gray was found dead in a hotel room in Iowa from a drug overdose on morphine and fentanyl. A harrowing year followed for the remaining members, fans and family; leaving behind his expectant wife and child. If the passing of a dear friend, brother, idol and more wasn’t enough, November 8 led to the shocking news that items which decorated the Gray’s grave, had been stolen.

“He was kind of the person in the band that really wanted everybody in the band to always get along and just concentrate on the band. He was a really great friend and a really great person. He’s going to be sadly missed, and the world is going to be a different place without him.” Shawn Crahan (Clown)

Slipknot were formed by Gray and percussionist Crahan in 1995 and have achieved great success during their career. After much consideration over the band’s future, Slipknot have decided to start touring again, with former guitarist Donnie Steele standing in on bass. They will be making their triumphant return at the Sonisphere festival in the UK on July 10 this year.

In the meantime, here are just a few of Slipknot’s finest tracks, celebrating the life of the man who founded and contributed to one of this generation’s greatest metal bands.

R.I.P Paul Gray, our thoughts are with you, April 8, 1972 – May 24, 2010
